Organisation NameLifehouse at RPA, The Chris O'Brien Cancer Centre
Urlhttp://www.lifehouserpa.org.au
Description

It is with a great sense of excitement that we are able to tell you that The Chris O'Brien Cancer Centre was officially launched in April 2009. Lifehouse at RPA is the vision of Professor Chris O’Brien who launched the project in 2006, shortly before he was diagnosed with cancer. On the 4th June 2009, Prof Chris O'Brien passed away at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. The team at Lifehouse at RPA will carry on the vision to ensure that his legacy will truly be a lasting one and that Australians will benefit for decades to come. Cancer touches us all, killing 40,000 Australians every year. It is already the single largest cause of premature death in this country and the number of new cases is expected to rise significantly over the next 5 years. At Lifehouse we are passionate about improving care and outcomes for cancer patients, their families and carers. Lifehouse will be a dedicated cancer hospital, designed around the needs of patients and their families. Research and education will be an integral part of what we do, ensuring that we make advances and train staff to improve outcomes for the patients of tomorrow. By rapidly incorporating the latest research findings with the treatment of patients we will deliver the very best possible clinical care and provide hope to cancer patients. The Lifehouse model will also offer holistic care in the form of complementary therapies and support services alongside traditional medical care. Every donation large or small will move us closer to our goal.

Enables$40 can buy enough laboratory materials to keep four researchers busy for one hour finding better ways of matching cancer drugs with cancer patients. $80 can buy one hour of time for an experienced researcher to work on new ways of protecting our skin against the cancer causing rays of the sun. $100 can buy one hour of time for a small research team to study ways if reducing depression after cancer treatment. $200 can buy one hour of time for a large research team to develop and test new cancer drugs. Even small donations can make a big difference. If half of all Australians donated $5.00 we would have enough money to build the new facility at RPA.

StatisticsAll of us will be touched by cancer during our lives. Cancer incidence in NSW is growing at 2.7%pa and will be the number one health issue in 10 to 15 years, surpassing cardiovascular disease - 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will contract cancer in their lifetime.

NewsThe $300 million new Sydney Cancer Centre will encompass state of the art clinical facilities and research with a projected 240-bed cancer treatment centre. Lifehouse at RPA will combine all facets of clinical care, including surgery, medical and radiation oncology, research as well as wellness and support services on an in-patient and outpatient basis to public and private patients alike. Co-located with Royal Prince Alfred and Sydney University, Lifehouse at RPA will be easily accessible from all over Sydney and throughout New South Wales. Lifehouse at RPA will be a place where clinical care and research are integrated to create opportunities for innovative discoveries, compassionate holistic care and better outcomes for patients, their families and carers. Capital works are expected to commence late 2009, with the official opening scheduled in 2012. We are excited to share the first draft plans with you, to demonstrate the features and design of this innovative facility. We will continue to keep you updated on the development and construction phases over the coming months via our website and other communications to be launched later in 2009.
