Description

For the past 20 years we have provided services to the most disadvantaged babies and children in our region. We train and support Foster Carers and run a High School for teenagers with high needs.

Galilee
EnablesA monthly donation of $30 will help us advertise for and train Foster Carers. A monthly donation of $50 will enable the school to undertake an additional excursion where the children increase their life skills.

StatisticsThere is a shortage of approximately 150 Foster Carers in our region.

NewsFOSTER kids in Canberra will now be able to cook, garden and participate in everyday activities on supervised visits with their parents, thanks to ACT Housing, Galilee and Bunnings. Judy Gleeson, from care agency Galilee, told “CityNews” that to date, it’s been difficult for children in out-of-home care (foster care) to interact normally with their families on scheduled visits. However, ACT Housing has just fulfilled a Galilee request for a Woden house, rent-free, for its children/parent-scheduled meetings. Bunnings has donated $3000 in materials plus staff time to help outfit the house and get it ready for family time. “We’re sourcing some kids recipe books, so the children will be able to cook with their parents, we’ll get them cooking muffins and so on; they’ll be able to do arts and crafts, gardening and board games,” Judy says. “Children are able to do these activities with their foster parents, but they’ve been meeting their own parents in fast-food restaurants or the park or sometimes the meeting room at Galilee; but it’s not the same as doing normal activities at home.” Judy says that foster care is ideally temporary, and for most children the aim is to get them back with their parents, so the meeting house will also be valuable in contributing to parenting skills. This way the parents are given role models – the supervisors – who are able to demonstrate things like cooking skills and positive ways to interact with their kids.
