    About CAFOur Board of Directors

    The CAF Australia Board is made up of eight volunteer members bringing together a range of skills and experience to guide CAF in its development and management of donor funds. 

    Daniel Sargeant, B Com (Melb), CA FAICD
    Acting Chairman of the Board
    Chairperson of Audit Committee

    Danny has an extensive business career spanning 30 years. His career includes senior management positions with KPMG, the Mars Group, Savin Corporation in the United States and Getronics in Australia and Asia.

    Danny now shares his time between community activities, personal business interests, along with consulting and non-executive roles in the private sector.

    This position with CAF allows Danny to use his financial skills to make a contribution to the overall community sector.

    Cynthia M. Nadai, BSc, MBA
    Board Member

    Cynthia Nadai was born in San Francisco and educated in the States. She moved to Australia in 1994 and became an Australian citizen in 2003.

    Cynthia's career has been both in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. In the States, she was a management consultant for AD Little in Cambridge and Vice President, Trust Services for PNC Bank in Boston. Upon moving to Sydney, Cynthia worked at the St James Ethics Centre as the Director of Operations and is currently on staff as a senior consultant and trainer for the Consulting, Training and Counselling Dimension. Cynthia has also trained as an ethics counsellor at the Centre.

    Outside of work, Cynthia is involved in establishing the Balmain/Rozelle Community Bank in partnership with Bendigo Bank.

    Melissa Conley Tyler, BA LLB (Hons) MALD
    Board Member

    Melissa Conley Tyler Melissa Conley Tyler is the National Executive Director of the Australian Institute of International Affairs. She is a lawyer and specialist in conflict resolution, including negotiation, mediation and peace education. She was previously Program Manager of the International Conflict Resolution Centre and remains a Senior Fellow in the Faculty of Law at the University of Melbourne.

    Melissa has more than 10 years experience working in the community sector in Australia, South Africa and the U.S.A. She has worked in trusts and foundations and corporate partnerships for Sydney City Mission and managed community & corporate partnerships for Reconciliation Australia. She has worked as a freelance fundraiser for a number of Australian non-profit organisations and is a member of the Fundraising Institute of Australia.

    Melissa has a strong interest in non-profit management, including program evaluation. She has published on the use of benchmarking in the non-profit sector in Australia in Benchmarking: An International Journal and is an Associate of the University of Melbourne's Centre for Program Evaluation and a member of the Australasian Evaluation Society. She has also been a board member of the Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture.

    Gary Moore
    Board Member

    Gary Moore Gary is currently the Director of Community Services at Marrickville Council. He is responsible for the overall management and leadership of an extensive range of children's services, community development programs, cultural development initiatives, community facilities and recreational planning and services.

    From 1995 to 2006, Gary was the Director (CEO) of the Council of Social Service of NSW (NCOSS), the State's peak non government human services body, which works with its members and networks, on behalf of disadvantaged people and communities, to achieve greater social justice.

    Gary has 30 years experience in policy development, program management and service delivery across the public and not for profit sectors in NSW. He has been a key participant in successful advocacy such as: the introduction of public housing access for single people in NSW; the establishment of various community enterprise development and job creation programs; the inception of major social impact assessment measures and community funding schemes in the liquor and gaming industries; and the negotiation of the Working Together for NSW Agreement between the NSW Government and the State's non government human services sector.

    Gary holds Bachelor degrees in Arts and Social work and a Masters in Management. In 2000 he was a participant in the Sydney Leadership program. Gary is currently a Board member of Charities Aid Foundation Australia, the Benevolent Society, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre and Network of Community Activities.

    Peter Opie
    Board Member

    Peter Opie is First Vice President, Investments, in the Merrill Lynch Global Private Client division.

    Peter joined Merrill Lynch in 1994 as a Financial Advisor. His role was to advise individuals with regard to international investing. In 2002 he became a partner in the Merrill Lynch Private Wealth Services Group in Australia, a specialist group who manage the investment portfolios of high-net wealth individuals, families and not-for-profit organisations. This team directly manages approximately $1.4billion in assets for around 100 client relationships.

    Peter is currently Chairman of the Merrill Lynch Asia Pacific Advisory Council to Management. He is also a member of the Merrill Lynch Australia Charity Committee.

    Prior to joining Merrill Lynch, Peter owned and operated his own Superannuation and Insurance consultancy for fifteen years.

    Malcolm Garratt, BSc., Ph.D., C.Eng

    Malcolm GarrattMalcolm Garratt was born and educated in England. He has spent his career as an international oil and gas industry executive with senior technical and commercial management roles at BP and BHP Billiton. Most recently he was Vice President of External Affairs at BHP Billiton.

    He has been Chairman of APPEA (Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association) and Chairman of the Sydney World Energy Congress Pty Ltd.

    Malcolm is currently also a board member of the Greenhouse Gas Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (CO2CRC) and a member of the Earth Resources Development Council in Victoria.

    Jim Elder
    Board Member
    Chairperson of Investment Committee

    Jim Elder is the former Deputy Premier of Queensland. He was a member of the Queensland Parliament for more than 11 years as Minister for State Development and Trade, Health Minister, Minister for Transport and Minister for Business, Industry and Regional Development.

    He is recognised by Queensland and Australian industry leaders as having been instrumental in Queensland’s industry and trade development over the last decade, including the $1.2 billion AMC project, Virgin Blue Airlines, the Milmerran/Intergen Power Station, Gold Coast Convention Centre and the SE Queensland Regional Forestry Agreement.

    He has worked to bring countless interstate and international companies to Queensland, as well as helping build existing companies and corporate markets in this state. His business expertise has also helped develop Queensland’s current trade relations with South East Asia, the US, India and Africa.

    Russell Prior
    Board Member

    Russell joined CAF UK in the autumn of 2005 where he is responsible for Enterprise and Philanthropy Development.  He is responsible for the development of CAF UK’s activities with Company and Individual Donors and with Charities. He is also responsible for the management of CAF’s International activities which includes offices in America, Australia, Bulgaria, India, Russia, South Africa and Brazil, all of which aim to increase the value and impact of giving worldwide.

    Until recently he was the Chair of the National Finance Hub, a body funded by the UK Government to develop financial sustainability in the Third Sector in the England. Russell is also a Trustee of a number of UK Charitable Foundation’s, whose work is focused on the emerging economies of the world.

    Prior to joining CAF Russell worked for Barclays PLC in Corporate and International Banking and Wealth Management.
