    About CAFOur Board of Directors

    The CAF Australia Board is made up of five volunteer members bringing together a range of skills and experience to guide CAF in its development and management of donor funds. 

    Daniel Sargeant, B Com (Melb), CA FAICD
    Acting Chairman of the Board
    Chairperson of Audit Committee

    Danny Sargeant has an extensive business career spanning 30 years. His career includes senior management positions with KPMG, the Mars Group, Savin Corporation in the United States and Getronics in Australia and Asia.

    Danny now shares his time between community activities, personal business interests, along with consulting and non-executive roles in the private sector.

    This position with CAF allows Danny to use his financial skills to make a contribution to the overall community sector.

    Cynthia M. Nadai, BSc, MBA

    Cynthia Nadai was born in San Francisco and educated in the States. She moved to Australia in 1994 and became an Australian citizen in 2003.

    Cynthia's career has been both in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. In the States, she was a management consultant for AD Little in Cambridge and Vice President, Trust Services for PNC Bank in Boston.

    Upon moving to Sydney, Cynthia worked at the St James Ethics Centre (SJEC) as the Director of Operations and subsequently as a senior consultant and trainer for the Consulting, Training and Counselling Dimension. Cynthia is currently an ethics counsellor at the Centre. She also represents SJEC on the Ethics Committee of the Fundraising Institute Australia.

    Cynthia was involved in establishing the Balmain/Rozelle Community Bank in partnership with Bendigo Bank, currently serving as Director and Treasurer.

    Peter Opie
    Board Member

    Peter Opie is First Vice President, Investments, in the Merrill Lynch Global Private Client division.

    Peter joined Merrill Lynch in 1994 as a Financial Advisor. His role was to advise individuals with regard to international investing. In 2002 he became a partner in the Merrill Lynch Private Wealth Services Group in Australia, a specialist group who manage the investment portfolios of high-net wealth individuals, families and not-for-profit organisations. This team directly manages approximately $1.4billion in assets for around 100 client relationships.

    Peter is currently Chairman of the Merrill Lynch Asia Pacific Advisory Council to Management. He is also a member of the Merrill Lynch Australia Charity Committee.

    Prior to joining Merrill Lynch, Peter owned and operated his own Superannuation and Insurance consultancy for fifteen years.

    Malcolm Garratt, BSc., Ph.D., C.Eng
    Board Member

    Malcolm Garratt was born and educated in England. He has spent his career as an international oil and gas industry executive with senior technical and commercial management roles at BP and BHP Billiton. Most recently he was Vice President of External Affairs at BHP Billiton.

    He has been Chairman of APPEA (Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association) and Chairman of the Sydney World Energy Congress Pty Ltd.

    Malcolm is currently also a board member of the Greenhouse Gas Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (CO2CRC) and a member of the Earth Resources Development Council in Victoria.

    Kieran Lane, LLB (Hons), LLM, Practising Solicitor (NSW), Affiliate ICAA
    Board Member

    Kieran Lane has been a partner of KPMG for 20 years - predominantly in the Tax area. He is a former member of KPMG's Australian National Board and was Chairman of KPMG's Audit Committee. Kieran currently holds a number of senior regional leadership roles within the firm and was unitl recently, the National Leader of KPMG's Australian China Business Practice.

    For 8 years up to 2009, Kieran was an active member of the Finance Advisory Committee for St Joseph’s College (one of Australia's leading independent Catholic schools). The Committee met regularly to discuss, review and guide the financial workings of the college, with its student population of around 1,000 boys.

    Kieran is currently a Board member of the Australia China Business Council (“ACBC”). A role he has held since 2008.

    Robert W Venner, LLB (Hons)
    Board Member

    Born and educated in England, Rob was admitted as a solicitor there in the mid seventies. He joined the Legal Department of BPplc as a legal adviser, and worked on projects in Europe and the Middle East.

    He transferred to Melbourne in the early eighties and apart from a two year posting to Wellington, New Zealand as Legal Manager and Company Secretary, he has been based in Melbourne, advising on projects in Australia and the Asian region.

    His last 10 years with BP were spent as Managing Counsel, Australasia. His areas of expertise include national and international joint ventures,commercial law, case management and corporate governance.

    Russell Prior
    Board Member

    Russell joined CAF UK in the autumn of 2005 where he is responsible for Enterprise and Philanthropy Development.  He is responsible for the development of CAF UK’s activities with Company and Individual Donors and with Charities. He is also responsible for the management of CAF’s International activities which includes offices in America, Australia, Bulgaria, India, Russia, South Africa and Brazil, all of which aim to increase the value and impact of giving worldwide.

    Until recently he was the Chair of the National Finance Hub, a body funded by the UK Government to develop financial sustainability in the Third Sector in the England. Russell is also a Trustee of a number of UK Charitable Foundation’s, whose work is focused on the emerging economies of the world.

    Prior to joining CAF Russell worked for Barclays PLC in Corporate and International Banking and Wealth Management.
