    Investors in Community Reinvestment Fund
    Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW

Name of Entity Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW
    Background

The Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW Inc commenced operations in 1985 with the aim of advocating for and supporting people in the community who suffer from a mental illness.

From a very humble beginning with a staff of 2 people, the organisation has now grown to a staff of 38, accommodated at their head office and in regional centres throughout NSW.

The Fellowship is now recognised by both the government and the community as making a significant contribution towards the support of people within the community who suffer an ongoing mental illness and their carers. Recurrent funding is provided by the government with grants negotiated on a triennial basis.

    Borrowing Requirement

    $40,000

    Loan Objective

To renovate Building 27 at the Old Gladesville Hospital.

    • The fellowship has a current lease from the NSW Dept of Health at low cost rental of $3,000 p.a.
    • Since occupation of the site the Fellowship has renovated approximately 75% of the site from capital and donations and now seeks to complete the remaining 25%.
    • The last part of the building will be used as a work space training centre.

The Installation of workstations, power and phone systems in the renovated area.

    Key Messages

Lack of traditional bank security and having never borrowed before made their loan request unattractive for their current account banker.

However, from Investors in Community (IIC)'s point of view there was a strong business case to lend.

A solid track record along with a known likely source of repayment and a well thought through contingency plan.

The IIC loan has enabled the Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW to proceed with the renovations as stage I and the purchase of the computer terminals/telephones as stage II.
